Meet Levi Tafari

LEVI TAFARI in CHINA

To celebrate the launch of this new website for English, UK performance artist Levi Tafari will tour China to give a series of workshops to secondary school children, Chinese secondary school teachers of English and university students.

Levi will visit Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai and Guangzhou from 9th - 20th September. Each city will hold two to three workshops over the course of two days.

The workshops will focus on the theme of environment, sport and UK culture, inspiring English learners and teachers to work creatively in English and encouraging them to produce their own piece of creative thought in English through a poetry competition using an interactive and easy-to-use poem maker. The competition will begin on September 10th and will last for three weeks. Users will be able to vote on poems submitted by other users. The winning poem will be judged by Levi Tafari and will receive a special prize.

LEVI TAFARI BIOGRAPHY

Levi was born and raised in the Toxteth district of Liverpool. Born in 1960 to Jamaican parents, he grew up in the Granby Street area and was heavily influenced by the different cultures around him.

A keen sportsman and student, Levi eventually decided to train as a chef and attended catering college where he studied classical French cuisine. He graduated with a distinction and entered the world of catering as a profession.

Around this time in the late 1970s Levi became interested in the Rastafarian movement and remains a committed member to this day. He was also looking for an outlet for his creative expression and began writing poetry and attending The Liverpool 8 Writers workshop. Inspired by this and the performance poetry explosion of the early 1980s he left the trade he loved for the art he loved even more.

Levi’s work is deeply rooted in the oral tradition. He sees himself as an Urban Griot, the griot being the traditional consciousness raiser, storyteller, newscaster and political agitator. He has had three collections of his poetry published. His work has also taken him around the world and down many paths – live performance, TV, radio, plays and creative workshops.

Levi now has a family of his own and continues to live with them in the community that inspired much of his early work, Toxteth.

Yeah, also saw his performances in Beijing. I am a real fan of 'Plastic fantastic' as well. Wish I'd got the chance to hear 'Litter' performed live though! Great poetry with clever use of words and a real sense of rythm

And also let us know more what plastic is.

Hey! Levi!
I am Sean,
you still remember me? I've been to your hometown b4 and pretended to be like we were the Beetles walking across the road in front of that famous bar. So glad that there is a way that we can communicate with you. I thought there might be no way I can get in touch with you any more after I met you at the end of your speech in UIBE, Beijing. It was a very cool lecture you gave us last night and I like the way you express yourself by putting your feelings in the poem. Liverpool is really a lovely city, I have liverpool local friends, too. They told me that they used to speak with a 'la' at the end of every sentence because it is a typical Liverpool dialect. Anyway, I am looking forward seeing you again. And you want to know how people feel about your poem, I'll be very glad to say:"Yeaman!" :)

hey levi!i'm the one u met and talked to the most this tuesday 11th,September in Luhe High school..it was really too fast to know more about u..deep down i wanna have another chance talking with u face to face..all of us were greatly inspired ,and delighted by u,ur passion, ur love, and ur personality and characteristics....thanks for the hugs at the very end. i felt a great knidness and love from u--as a first-sight friend. u called each of us your friend, which made me feel that u were so easygoing and close to us...that should be called a real poet--a heart full of love and kindness, a person friendly to everyone cuz of the faith he holds...

all in all dear levi, i do take u as a friend that i'll be with,or even just ur poems. though we've only met for such a short time(but i stayed with u till u left..hehe)u taught and gave me a lot..ur assignment on the cover and beside"the first woman in my life"--"stay cool" and "one love"have already been planted in my brain. i'll keep this in mind.

thanks levi, for ur love ur passion ur inspiration ur emotion and everything u gave me.

-------------------------all love
Vero
