Limericks

Created 31/10/2007 - 20:47

This lesson plan looks at the potentially tricky
subject of limericks, which form part of the new EMB secondary syllabus
on Learning English through poems and songs.

Limericks are short, humorous, rhyming poems. They have a fixed number
of lines, five, and a fixed pattern of rhythm and rhyme.

The aim of this first lesson is to focus on the rhythm and rhyme of
limericks. In the following lesson, the focus will shift to the themes
of limericks and provide the opportunity for students to produce their
own limericks.

Included in the lesson materials are a number of photocopiable
activities to raise awareness of the pattern of beats in each line and
the use of rhyming words at the end of lines.

The lesson plan provides step by step guidance to help teachers who may be unfamiliar with this type of verse.

The lesson includes audio. The exercises in the lesson plan are
downloadable below.
