Question: What is the difference between between and among?
Grammar: Prepositions
Generally speaking, the simple rule is that between is between two things, and among is among three or more things. So for example:
Between you and me, I don’t think Mary is getting a promotion.
There are no trouble-makers among our school’s students.
However, there are some situations involving three or more things where we would use between:
A united situation:
We raised over five thousand dollars between the three of us.
An opposition or competition
There was a lot of competition between the top three students, and it was difficult to choose between them for the prize.
