Where we are in China and Hong Kong
We opened our first office in Asia in Chongqing in 1943. We now have centres in Beijing [1], Shanghai [2], Guangzhou [3] , Chongqing [4] and Hong Kong [5] . So whether you want to learn English, study in Britain or discover the latest ideas from the UK - this is the place to start.In China we operate as the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy in Beijing, and the Cultural and Education Section of the British Consulate-General in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing.

In the UK the British Council is registered as a charity (not-for-profit-organisation) and operates as an executive non-departmental public body. We receive a grant from the British Government. The British Council has 7,500 staff in offices, teaching centres, libraries and information and resource centres in 233 towns and cities in 109 countries and territories worldwide
