a very good way to start a speech is to emphasize on the topic. for example, if u want to give a speech on televison spreads terror, you can start like this-
A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T...[SAY T STRONGLY] T for television, t for terror......

Thank you, hermia! Thanks for sharing the information with me. And from Nov,23 to Nov 26, each evening on CCTV9, there is an English speaking contest. I'm watching it and hopefully I can get some good methods from it.

A couple of days ago I was flipping through channels and caught something great on ETV (education TV). It's a famous HK comedian giving a talk to local secondary school students on giving speech. I couldn't remember the whole thing but he mentioned there were 3 important points in a speech. You have to be 1) Concise2) Direct 3) To the point He also mentioned some good methods on how to say good jokes. I am sorry I don't quite remember the methods but I will try to see if I can find that video online and tell you more about it.

I think there are a few ways. You could start your speech with a rhetorical question. Or you could start with a famous quote. Or you could even start with an interesting story.
