Being a ....

Question: Is this sentence correct? – Be a teacher is difficult.

Grammar: Gerunds

This sentence is not correct. To correct it, you need to write:

Being a teacher is difficult.

In this sentence, (being a teacher) is the subject – and therefore being is a noun, not a verb. In English grammar, this is called a gerund. To make a gerund, we use the –ing form of a verb.

Consider this sentence pair:

  • I don’t ski every weekend because skiing is expensive. Here, ski is a verb, but in the second clause, it is a noun. More examples:
  • He always studies very hard, but studying hard is difficult for me. * She is a teacher because being a teacher is a rewarding job.
