To continue with my thoughts on teaching listening, I'd like to focus on taking effective ways to train in class.
It is not easy to teach a listening lesson well. Because listening
lesson is not only to teach something, what is more, it is the
procedure to teach the way and techniques of language listening. To
teach listening lesson well, teachers not only use the modern teaching
medias but also act as "the director on the field", "the examiner of
students" and "the commentator of listening problems".
To insist on speaking English in the early three minutes in class and
let all the students to act a short play in turns. The concrete ways
are from the simple to the difficult, step by step, from the point to
the face.
Students can combine freely but teachers should limit the line from one
to four students. And students can act out some daily dialogues in
which there is what they learn in class. For example, school life, the
short story and free talk, etc. After their acting, teachers should
comment on the play and ask others some questions that are based on the
play. We needn't ask many questions but the questions must be related
to the key points. This encourages the students to speak more, on the
other hand, teachers can tell whether the students are sincere in class
or not.
Although the short play occupies a few minutes, it plays an important part in stimulating the class atmosphere and bringing out the students' imitation and creativity. I would nsist on combining the listening and speaking with the text taught tightly in class.
When teachers teach a new lesson, let the students first listen to the recording of the text, and then ask some questions according to the text they have heard. The questions that teachers ask can be True Or False questions, or Wh-questions and general questions; the questions can cover simple content or complex.
Therefore, students of different levels can take part in the activity so as to reach the aim of training students’ listening and speaking ability. In class, try to teach in English with standard pronunciation and tone. Students also try their best to ask and answer questions in English.
After the new unite, ask students to retell or act out the text. This is one of the best ways to train the students to practise what they have learned in class.
