American Dreamz—that’s not funny The movie “Amerian Dreamz” reminds me a quotation of William Shakespeare—All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. So, what we have to do is to act it well in the film as well as in this world.
This sprawling but curiously mild social satire finds U.S. President Staton (Dennis Quaid) slipping in the polls. On the advice of his weaselly chief of staff (Willem Dafoe) he agrees to a one-shot appearance as guest judge on "American Dreamz," the nation's No. 1 talent showcase, hosted by an oil slick named Martin Tweed (Hugh Grant), the one who knows exactly what’s humanity, the good ones and evil ones.
We can see that the Tv show is called American Dreamz. But actually it has destroyed many dreamers’ dreams. You are not full of stories, you are not typical, you cannot catch the audiences’ eyes. Then, sorry, you are out.
This, is so called American Dreams. Then we know what the director wants to present to us. “Imagine a country, the president never read newspapers, to raise a war because of wrong reason, people vote for a pop idol more than vote for the next president, that's right, this is the American dream! " the director, Paul Weitz ever said. It’s a kind of sarcasm. The sparkling point of the film is when it combines politics and entertainment together, which makes more gripping viewing.
What exactly does the film want to tell us? According to the strapline, it is about “American Dreamz--that's dreams with a z,” But I don’t think so, the dreamers have lost their own dreams. I remember Tweed said “I am joking, but you didn’t laugh.” And Sally said “It wasn’t funny.” Yes, the war, the dreamz and the love are not funny things. Maybe we can say “American Dreamz—that’s not funny”.
Have you seen this film?
Do you agree with Dory's reivew?
