Dance Music

Read

I was rather happy to see that a song composed by Giorgio Moroder has been chosen as the theme song for the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. Listen here on You Tube. Not a native Brit, but of Italian descent, Giorgio was essential to the advent of dance music, particularly House music which is heard around the world today.

House Music is a mixture of R&B, Soul, Funk, Salsa, Disco all thrown in together. Some sub categories are more electronic, but it is often easily categorised with a ‘four to the floor’ beat. It is called House music as it was first made popular by DJ’s at the Warehouse club in Chicago. Other producers claim that it is called as such owing to early production being done in people’s houses with new found electronic instruments.

Nearly 30 years on, it is still going strong in the UK as clubbers dance the night away to repetitive beats and funky basslines. On this weeks Selector show my recommendation is not exactly house music but still in the overall genre of Dance music. When you have a moment check out ‘Milk Crisis’ by the Go!Team from Brighton.

The Go!Team fuse all types of styles into their music, and I managed to catch them live in Beijing when they were on their Asian Tour. Have a look for their lead singer who is British born Chinese.
